Pounding metal

Metal.jpgAt the end of a stressful week, pounding metal can feel pretty good. Learn the basics of forging, tapering, twisting and scrolling in a metal-working class led by Sharon Blondet who has been working with metal for more than 30 years.

The classes, held in a working blacksmith shop, will include short lectures and demonstrations, as students are guided through the process of designing and making their own small works such as letter openers or jewelry.

While materials for the planned projects are included in the fee, participants may bring anything they think can be incorporated in projects such as wire (bronze, copper, etc), beads or found objects.

Classes, which are limited to 10 to 12 people, will be held 9:30 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, March 27 through May 1, in a metal shop at 617 S.W. Second Ave., Fort Lauderdale. Cost: $150 for all six classes. For details, call 954-309-5040.

Check out some of Blondet’s work in the accompanying photo gallery.
