When Cassie “Kazilla” Williams first attended Art Basel three years ago, the event both intimidated and inspired her. “The Convention Center alone is enough to overwhelm the senses, not to mention the surrounding galleries and art fairs,” says the illustration student at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. “I knew then that I wanted to be a part of this incredible experience.”
While searching for places at which to show her work, she was asked to exhibit at the American Legion in the Miami Modern District. Upon seeing the massive space, she began to consider its potential as a gallery.
So Williams and Mike Franco, founder of West Palm Beach-based Wizard Sleeve Toys, have teamed up with the Hive Gallery in Los Angeles, the Steve Brown Gallery in Cleveland and the D.E.A.D. Gallery in Belgium to present The Multiversal Group Show, which will include art by 150 local and international artists in eight rooms at the American Legion. Expect a diverse mix of fine, lowbrow and installation art; photography; music; and body-painting.
The show will present works by dozens of local artists, including Nathan Lumm, Nicholas F. Romero, Natali Martinez, Helena Garcia, Tara Hauck and Skot Olsen. Another segment of the show, titled “School of Hard Knocks,” will highlight the work of students from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and Miami International University of Art and Design. The musical lineup will include MAYDAY!, Fusik, Ketchy Shuby, hip-hop act Haviken Hayes, rock band Radioboxer and the power-pop group New City Lions.
The event will run 5 p.m. to 5 a.m. Thursday through Sunday at American Legion, 64th Avenue and Biscayne Boulevard, in Miami. Visit www.Multiversalgroupshow.com.
