● While looking for details on upcoming Day of the Dead in Fort Lauderdale’s Fat Village Arts District I came across this recent video of Jim Hammond, the Fat Village-based artist and puppet-master behind a parade of skeletons and puppets that will begin at Fort Lauderdale’s Museum of Art (where zombies and skeletons get in for free) at 5:15 p.m. Oct. 30 and proceed to Fat Village for a night of music, drinks and art. “This is the biggest event Fat Village has ever put together and it’s free and open to the public of all ages,” says 18 Rabbit Gallery owner Leah Brown. Fat Village’s Day of the Dead exhibition, curated by Susan Hopper, will feature large-scale installations including a 15-foot long slave ship. Additionally,Brown is organizing an exhibition of altars made by Tony Rodriguez, Rob Herrera, Rosalia Curbelo, Denny Reed, Janet LuRu Rudawsky and others.
Fat Village visitors can also expect live music, Edgar Allen Poe poetry readings and a zombie re-enactment of the Michael Jackson “Thriller” music video organized by Living Arts Theatre. The Day of the Dead exhibition and altars will be on display Tuesday, Nov.2 (the actual Day of the Dead), which is also the rain date for the skeleton parade. The post-parade Oct. 30 Fat Village party starts around 6 p.m. at Fat Village Art Party Loft, 523 N.W. First Ave., Fort Lauderdale. The surrounding Fat Village studios and galleries will also be open since it’s the night of the district’s monthly art walk. For more details, visit Dayofthedeadflorida.com.
● Speaking of Fat Village, here’s a video Scott Nguyen posted on the Art of Alex Studios, 500 N.W. First Ave., Fort Lauderdale.
