When Art Basel hits Miami Beach, even a dumpster can become a gallery wall of sorts. So 6th Street Container Alternative Art Space will join with General Hauling Service and Bakehouse Art Complex to present Dumpster Art, which will provide five artists an opportunity to do what they do best on dumpsters that will be strategically placed throughout Miami Beach during Art Basel to attract the attention of all those art collectors and gallerists who will arrive in early December.
Artists must be from the tri-county area and will have until noon on Oct. 28 to submit five images (each less than one megabyte) of their work, a written proposal for the work to be created on the container and a CV/resume that includes their e-mail address, physical address and phone number. Proposals will be judged by Christopher Miro, director of Christopher Miro Gallery, artists Maria Amores and Adalberto Delgado of 6th Street Container and Bakehouse director Arlys W. Raymond. Bakehouse will collaborate on one of the dumpsters, so that leaves just four. The top 3 selected artists will also received prizes $500, $250 and $75.
One of the challenges is that due to city and country regulations, General Hauling Service’s 13-by-19- inch logo must remain visible on the container. Selected artists will be notified via e-mail by Nov. 5 and can begin working on their dumpsters immediately at the Bakehouse. I wonder if Switzerland’s Art Basel has dumpster art.
