DE-INSTALLING BRILLIANCE
I remember when receptions were reserved for art openings, but now there are closing receptions too. I like the idea, especially since so many openings occur simultaneously and it’s easy to miss the opening of a show one wants to attend.
Now we have a closing reception with a de-installation. In March, we ran a story about Jonathan Brilliant’s Have Sticks Will Travel World Tour stopping at 18 Rabbit Gallery in Fort Lauderdale. That month, Brilliant spent more than a week building his installation from 50,000 to 60,000 coffee sticks. Now the show will close with a twist tonight. “As everyone has been so curious about the construction and deconstruction of the woven-stick installation, we will be dismantling it during the reception, and all attending will have the option to take home a piece of it to be used as a wall hanging, ceiling piece, or a framable work of art,” gallery owner Leah Brown notes in her invitation.
Before heading off to see the work broken into little pieces, check out this video of the installation, and here’s a Flickr set of shots of his work that I took at the opening. The closing reception and de-installation is 7-9 p.m. tonight (Friday) at 18 Rabbit Gallery, 16 N.W. 1st Ave., Fort Lauderdale. Cost: $15. Call 828-279-1481.
INNER REFLECTIONS
Also opening tonight is “Inner Reflections,” the solo exhibition of Liora G. Davis, a healing arts center devoted to providing equal access to quality holistic care that includes Chinese herbs, acupuncture and massage in a soothing, supportive environment. The philosophy at CAMP4Health, where services are offered on a sliding scale based on income and circumstances, is that health care is a right rather than a luxury. As such, they provide acupuncture and herbs to many at no charge and don’t reject people because they can’t afford treatment. Meet the artist Liora G. Davis 5 to 8 p.m. tonight (Friday) at her exhibition at Camp4Health, 2040 B N. Dixie Highway, Wilton Manors. Call 954-530-4832.
