See that crazy little madman at the top of this post? That’s Steve Sticht and he’s yelling, “Ready or not, here I come!” He’s looking for art for his next annual Art Scavenger Hunt.
Sticht has been hiding his eyes and counting in the corner all year long, waiting for the time of year when he gathers fun-spirited local artists to make art works and participate in a big game of hide and seek. Artists hide the art and art lovers come and find it. It could be up a tree, under a rock, hanging from a fence or in some weeds down on the corner. The art is all shapes and sizes. The biggest so far was a 4′ x 8′ tiki on plywood and the smallest were art works in teeny little bags not much bigger than a thumb.
Art Scavenger Hunt, which always takes place the Saturday night after Thanksgiving, is a South Florida tradition that I hope will last forever. What could be better than a bunch of people running around hiding art just so that people can find it, treasure it and take it home … all for free? After people find the art, the artists sign the works.
The hunt always takes place in the downtown Fort Lauderdale area, though Sticht is still working out the fine details for this year’s location. He puts a lot of work into this event, sometimes making more than 80 of the artworks himself. The little guy at the top of this post is one of his works.
Sticht always has many local artists who work with him on this, and this year’s he’s considering bringing some more new ones into the mix. So if you’re an artist and you think this sounds like fun, then come out, come out, wherever you are, and drop Sticht an e-mail at artscavengerhunt@bellsouth.net. It’s probably a good idea to send a link to your art Web site as well.
