Art made from red bull cans, brainstorming sessions and screenplays about aliens and metal bands begin the weekend’s art posts. Info on a few more shows is forthcoming, so stop back later if you’re looking for more art happenings to check out this weekend.
THE BULL AT THE BEACH
The Red Bull Art of Can exhibition has opened near Ocean Drive and Ninth Street in South Beach tonight and will run through March 14. The exhibition of 47 works made from Red Bull cans includes an eight-foot tall Egyptian wall with hieroglyphics, a couture gown, a bike and a big butterfly. Yes, I know you want to see at least one of the cool sculptures here on this page, but you have to go to Red Bull’s Web site as I haven’t been able to get any of the pics to share with you, except for one of a Red Bull can, and I know you’ve seen that before.
CREMATOR 305
Cremator 305, an art installation by Jason Handelsman, starts at 7 p.m. tonight (Friday) at Sweat Records. See a video of Handelsman’s works and read his post at Filthysouth.com where the artist writes about “drawing lots of pictures for the past couple of years in order to deal with my feelings of inner turmoil and conflict. You know when life just seems fucking impossible? You try to stay calm and positive but there are demons inside. I have been dealing with these demons and they don’t go away. I have tried everything …. but drinking and drugs only makes matters worse … believe me …. I don’t ever want to sleep under a bridge again … or on a golf course.” The feelings behind these words seem to be captured in the expressive faces of the characters Handelsman has drawn. The show, he notes, will include metal bands and Kevin Warhaft (former host of a metal show on WVUM 90.5), who will portray Jason Handelsman in a screenplay they’ve been working on “about metal in Miami, aliens and Kevin Warhaft as Jason Handelsman like Face/Off.” Sweat Records is at 5505 N.E. Second Ave., Miami. Call 786-693-9305 or visit

SOLO GROUP SHOW
Painter Daniel Hubbard will explore the idea of groups in Selective Portraits, his 100-portrait solo exhibition that examines the binding element that constitutes a group. Hubbard notes that “no person, no painting, no place is perfect.” Hubbard’s show will open at 7 p.m. Saturday at 18 Rabbit Gallery, 16 N.W. First St., Fort Lauderdale. Call 828-279-1481 or visit 18rabbitgallery.com.
KNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOR
Artists shouldn’t spend Sunday dreading their Monday morning return to the day job they need to pay the bills. That’s especially true if those artists want to secure funding for the projects they’re passionate about. Knight Arts Challenge, which has funded 51 projects in two years, is appealing to non-profit organizations and individuals to submit their ideas to inspire our local arts scene through March 15. On Sunday night, Bas Fisher Invitational, which won a Knight Arts Challenge grant in 2008, invites applicants to discuss their ideas with other artists and improve their wording and get feedback. The session will start at 7 p.m. Sunday and run a few hours. Afterwards, guests are invited to stick around for a Zoolander screening. Bas Fisher Invitational is at 180 N.E. 39th St., Suite 210, Miami. Visit Basfisherinvitational.com or Knightarts.org.
