Art of the Weekend

Shows inspired by pee-filled supersoakers, deep-fried laptops, environmental issues and the way the light falls on things in this week’s Art of the Weekend.

dada-01DADARHEA

Dadarhea, the culmination of a month-long residency at O.H.W.O.W. in Miami and Bec Stupak’s Honeygun Labs in New York City will open tonight (Friday) and run through Aug. 31. Dadarhea is a freeform video workshop with “artists who pride themselves on confounding their audiences, allowing them to employ animation, live action video (on location and greenscreen), musical performance, or any and all improvised and questionable behavior.”

The artists, who have been experimenting with the possibility of “total video saturation,”  include Brian Belott, Melissa dada-02Brown, Jim Drain, Eric Fensler, Naomi Fisher, Devin Flynn, Friends With You, Jessie Gold, Billy Grant, Laura Grant and Joe Grillo, Alvaro Ilizarbe, Todd James,Erin Krause, Alison Kuo, Marie Lorenz, Takeshi Murata, Ara Peterson, Francine Speigel, Jen Stark and Michael Williams.

Dadarhea is described by O.H.W.O.W. Gallery as “an idea born from an absurd dream involving pee-filled supersoakers and deep fried laptops. It’s a dadaist pizzeria. It’s idea-rhea. It’s the video art equivalent to fantasy island, where Devin Flynn is the Mr. Roarke to Jim Drain’s tattoo.”

The finished video, accompanied by a related installation, will be shown 8-11 p.m. Friday at O.H.W.O.W., 3100 N.W. Seventh Ave., Miami. After the opening, there’s an after-party with DJ A.D.D. (Aron the Downtown Don) at Bar, 28 N.E. 14th St., in downtown Miami. They promise no cover, cheap drinks and no hassle.IMG_0781 (1)

GRAND OPENING: FOR ART SAKE

Vionette Torres of  Vionette Photography is among the 10 artists who will exhibit at the grand opening of For Art Sake, a gallery owned by Debbi and Alan Becker. Torres (whose photos are shown here) describes the photographic series she will exhibit as “straight-up urban from Paris, Venice and Miami. “I’m showing urban because I want to share the beauty we have around us no matter where we go. thee is art before our eyes. We just have to IMG_9477_1 copy copybe willing to stop, be still and see how the light falls on things. Traveling to me is the most wonderful way to gain perspective and find centering. It takes getting out of our comfortable environment to see that there is actually more to life.”

Other artists in the show, sponsored by WeMerge, Sushi Blues Cafe, The Greek Joint and Workbox Creative, include Jeff DeKal, Eliane R. Harvey, Pablo Constriciani, Ken Pomerance, Megan Dejo, Ellen Macioce, Joanne Berger, Debbi Becker and Larry Lebin.

The grand opening reception starts at 7 p.m. Saturday and runs until 1 a.m at For Art Sake is at 2000 Harrison Street, #2, Hollywood. Call 954-921-2533.
