Glassblowing, half-dressed musicians, local artists in bathtubs and a pen-and-ink show in the latest Art of the Weekend.
THE ART OF LAKE WORTH IT!
There will be plenty of local art to accompany the music from the 20 bands playing the Lake Worth It! festival on Saturday.
The roster of more than 40 artists that indie craft queen Amanda Linton booked into the fest includes Ryan David, who is pictured here making the sort of hand-blown glass jewelry he will make at his Kiss My Glass booth at the festival this weekend and Justin Vilonna a.k.a. Invi, who uses spray paint and markers to create monsters, zombies and ghosts on canvas, wood, and vinyl records.
Also, photographer Monica McGivern, will unveil Lake Worth Photo Project, her exhibition of 40 black-and-white photographs of local musicians, but not in performance mode. Assisted by fellow photographer Daniel Millay, she shot each in the same lighting and pose. There were four shoots and many of the photos were taken at local promoter Steve Rullman’s house. The guys were shirtless and the women wore tank tops and pushed the sleeves down, allowing McGivern to take head-and-shoulder shots that are all skin. The idea was to strip everything away and hone in on each musician’s expression, and what they wished to convey. The black-and-white photo pictured here is of Chuck Andrews, lead singer of fire Zuave (yes, they spell fire with a little ‘f’) text messaging while McGivern did test shots of the lighting.
To learn more about McGivern’s project, and how her last exhibit landed her in a Loxahatchee living with a man on a horse who demanded horse surfing music be played, check out our Fresh Art feature on her later this month. Meanwhile, you can check out her exhibition at Lake Worth It! which runs 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday at Bryant Park, 30 S. Golfview Road, in Lake Worth. Tickets cost $10 in advance from bands, $15 in advance on the Web site and $20 the day of the show. For more info, check out our story on Lake Worth It!
SQUEAKY CLEAN ARTISTS
Kris Starry will exhibit work from her Bathtub Series at the Fall Art Festival at Schacknow Art Museum in Plantation. The series, which depicts 13 tattooed female South Florida artists in bubble baths, is about being sexy without showing too much. While the artists have a multitude of talents that include cupcake baking, painting, hairstyling, playing music and sewing, each hopped into a bathtub to be photographed by Starry, who sought out different tubs around town for each and every one of her subjects. The first three tub-divers were Katya Neptune, Georgette Pressler (pictured here) and Stefanie Murello (a.k.a. Polly Peachums).
Running in conjunction with the Fall Festival is the Pen and Ink Show featuring Andrew Avery, CandiSweetArt (check out her video of her art in the show), Paul Caprio, Frankie Curran, Jeffrey Dokken, Kiersten Eisman, Akeim Ford, Luzalma Gonzalez, Randy Guerra, Jon Hunt, Japanda, Rudy Mardy, Lee Onami, Randy Procter, Vaughn Reynolds, Melissa Rivera, Brittany Smith, Liric Souol and Arianna Veitch.
The shows open 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday and run through Sept. 25 at Schacknow Museum of Fine Arts, 7080 N.W. Fourth St. , Plantation. Cover is $10 and includes food, drinks and entertainment. Call 954-583-5551.
