Art of the Rainy Weekend

This weekend’s art openings and parties ….

Backyard by Lori PraticoTonight (Friday) is the opening of the fifth annual Red Eye, a multimedia exhibition presented by the nonprofit Fort Lauderdale arts organization ArtServe. Each year, ArtServe solicits work from local artists who produce “highly inventive, lowbrow and radical art.” To meet the criteria, the work must have origins in punk music, underground comics, hot rods or other subcultures, or make a statement about current societal issues or trends. This year, ArtServe worked with the Independent Working Artist Network (I.W.A.N.), the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and 18 Rabbit Gallery to promote a show billed as a “twisted exposé of the uncommon.” The resulting exhibition, which drew 190 visual art submissions and nine installations, is the largest since Red Eye’s 2006 inception and will include artists Skot Olsen, JoAnn Nava, Juan chris riccardoCarlos Soto, Keith Clark, Lori Pratico (whose graphite and pastel-on-illustration-board titled “Backyard”  is pictured here), and many others. The show went on display July 1, but the opening reception, which will include short films, dance performances, improvisational theater and music by , Alexander, the Green Mantles and  The Waves, is tonight.
